{"id":233978,"date":"2021-10-22T07:37:28","date_gmt":"2021-10-22T05:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/biber-04-in-novi-sad-on-reconciliation-and-healing-of-our-societies\/"},"modified":"2021-11-02T08:27:41","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T07:27:41","slug":"biber-04-in-novi-sad-on-reconciliation-and-healing-of-our-societies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/en\/biber-04-in-novi-sad-on-reconciliation-and-healing-of-our-societies\/","title":{"rendered":"Biber 04 in Novi Sad: On Reconciliation and Healing of Our Societies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The collection of short stories from the fourth Biber Contest was presented in Novi Sad on Thursday, 21 October 2021.<\/p>\n<p>A panel discussion was organised to promote the Biber 04 collection at Bulevar Books with the following panellists:\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Maja Halapir<\/strong>, recipient of the third prize for her story <a href=\"https:\/\/biber.nenasilje.org\/prica\/trokut\/\">Trokut [Triangle];<\/a><strong>Marijana \u010canak<\/strong>, whose excellent story <a href=\"https:\/\/biber.nenasilje.org\/prica\/razmjena\/\">Razmjena [Exchange]<\/a> was included in the collection; <strong>Bojan Krivokapi\u0107<\/strong>, recipient of the first prize for his story <a href=\"https:\/\/biber.nenasilje.org\/prica\/pticice\/\">Pti\u010dice [Little Birds]<\/a>; <strong>Qerim Ondozi<\/strong>, translator of the stories into Albanian; and <strong>Davorka Turk<\/strong>, member of the Biber Team.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion was moderated by author <strong>Andrea Popov Mileti\u0107<\/strong>, a native of Novi Sad and a participant in one of the previous Biber Contests whose story was included in the Biber 02 collection. The discussion first focused on how much literature is translated into languages of the region and how we have grown apart in that sense as well over the past decades, with the Biber Contest being a rare example where stories are translated from and into various languages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qerim Ondozi<\/strong>, a member of the Biber Team who translated the stories into Albanian said:\u00a0 \u201cLiterary exchange between Albanians and the rest of the region is very important. We share the same context, the same burden, we hate and love the same way, it\u2019s sad we choose not to translate. We cannot build a normal life if we are not speaking with our immediate neighbours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-233890\" src=\"https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20211021_NCH_5855-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20211021_NCH_5855-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20211021_NCH_5855-1280x854.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20211021_NCH_5855-980x654.jpg 980w, https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20211021_NCH_5855-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 2560px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo enter the thoughts of the other, to inspire empathy, to see your so-called enemy\u2019s tears, this means accepting the other and is the path towards reconciliation,\u201d said <strong>Maja Halapir<\/strong> from Samobor, who won the third prize.<\/p>\n<p>Winner of the first prize and jury member for the Biber 01 Contest <strong>Bojan Krivokapi\u0107<\/strong> added:\u00a0 \u201cYugoslavia falling apart is the single most powerful even of our lives and it will outlive us. I like taking part in anonymous contests, to see how far my story will go. What I wanted most was to see my stories translated into Albanian and Macedonian. It\u2019s important to me that they will be read in Albanian and Macedonian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Davorka Turk<\/strong>, speaking on behalf of the Centre for Nonviolent Action and the Biber Team, pointed out that \u201csince I\u2019ve lived in Sarajevo, which is almost ten years now, this moment is the most critical in terms of nationalism,\u201d while Qerim Ondozi added how horrified he was at the readiness of people to go to war, that war is treated as an option at all in public discourse.<\/p>\n<p>Maja, Bojan and Marijana read excerpts from their stories to the audience in Novi Sad, and it was a particular delight to have Qerim read an excerpt from the story by Milica Ra\u0161i\u0107 in his translation into Albanian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this process, reconciliation is not a strong enough word. Children make up, here we need healing, a process of healing,\u201d Marijana \u010canak added and pointed out that literature was a vast field where we can understand others the way they understand themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion was organised by the Cracker Initiative and Bulevar Books from Novi Sad, and the Centre for Nonviolent Action Sarajevo-Belgrade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-233892\" src=\"https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20211021_NCH_5853-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20211021_NCH_5853-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20211021_NCH_5853-1280x854.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20211021_NCH_5853-980x654.jpg 980w, https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/20211021_NCH_5853-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 2560px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Biber is a short story contest for engaged stories in Albanian, Macedonian, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and Montenegrin. The theme of the contest is reconciliation in the context of the aftermath of the wars and violence in the countries of former Yugoslavia, but also eligible are stories that can contribute to better understanding among people, reducing hatred and dismantling prejudice, anti-war stories, stories about dealing with the past, deconstructing images of the enemy, about empathy, brave stories that dare walk in the \u201cenemy\u2019s\u201d shoes, stories that push boundaries and open up the way to build a more stable, safer and freer future for all.<\/p>\n<p>The contest is organised by the Biber team of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nenasilje.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Nonviolent Action Sarajevo-Belgrade.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The fourth Biber Contest was opened in late April 2020. There were around 750 entries.
