By taking part in the training, I realised how much our history of violence shapes us and prevents us from fully expressing our identities. This also goes for those of us born during or right after the war(s). In moments of vulnerability during the training, I became aware of the importance of support from people around you (a handshake, a hug, active listening and tangible empathy). During a break, we went down to the sea and literally screamed into the waves that were pounding the rocks below us. It seemed crazy and pointless, but we got all our negative energy out and felt empowered. I hope the “screamers” still have their strong voices to fight against all the waves we have to fight in peace activism.
If it were up to me, the basic training in peacebuilding would be part of mandatory schooling in all the countries of the region. If you want to experience catharsis, sign up for the training. Don’t take it lightly, it’s a serious endeavour. It’ll turn your experiences, beliefs and emotions upside down. Even five days after the training, I’m still trying to put together everything I experienced during those 10 days. Without wanting to sound pretentious, I will say that the training made me a better person. So go ahead, sign up!
